The Death of Audio - concept album
The death of audio is a Hip-Hop instrumental concept album, focusing on exploring sampling and repurposing of vocals from a variety of European musical mediums. The original concept was taken from observing the birth of Hip-hop, a genre of music that was created when artists in the late 70’s, 80’s and 90’s began to recycle and re-invent the music of their parent’s generation. Arguably creating one of the most prominent musical genres the world had ever seen. The idea behind this album is to take the original concept of early Hip-Hop and to reimagine it in the setting and context of my own childhood. This means the source of many of the sounds (samples and individual drum hits) will be taken from the music I was raised on. The genres encompassed in this project will be explored more through various blog posts as the album progresses, but so far they include a mix of classic rock, country, folk, soul and a variety of traditional music taken from around Europe.
The album itself will be created through semi-traditional means. Where many of the early Hip Hop tracks were created using vinyl samples and samplers such as the MPC, this album will use a variety of CD and vinyl samples with a Native Instruments Machine taking the place of the classic MPC. It is my view that using these mediums and the limitations that come with them pay homage to the original pioneers of the genre, whilst still allowing a modern quality of production and workflow.
This project has a long way to go, but you can keep up to date with my progress by checking out the blog posts.
